Au Revoir Crazy European Chick Joe Schreiber Books
Au Revoir is a very silly, very fun quick read. Perry is a normal teen. He would rather play a gig in Manhattan with his rock band than go to the prom, but his parents force him to take their geeky, frumpy, anti-social Lithuanian exchange student to the prom before she heads back to Europe. On prom night, Gobija comes down the stairs wearing a hideous traditional Lithuanian festival dress. Perry is mortified, and of course, his fears are realized when, as soon as they enter the prom, the high school bullies pick a fight. Perry runs away. Gobija puts all three football players in the hospital. She then convinces Perry to drive to Manhattan where she can get them into Jay Z's night club. What 18 year old kid would say no to that? Upon arrival, Gobija goes into the bathroom looking like a 1930's Frau great-grandmother and emerges a few minutes later looking like Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith - giant gun and all. Next thing Perry knows they are fleeing the police and he is an accessory to murder. Turns out Gobija is an assassin with a very long hit list and a very short timeline. How is Perry going to save himself and stop Gobija? How do you stop a highly trained killing machine? What was she doing living with his family all those months? How is he going to explain bullet holes in his father's $80,000 Jaguar? Au Revoir Crazy European Chick Joe Schreiber Books Reviews
Typically when I think of YA novels, my mind tends towards coming-of-age stories infused with the supernatural. I don't think I've ever read one that was a coming-of-age story directed by John McTiernan, Luc Besson, or maybe early-2000's McG. This would be my first in that respect, so if this is a staple subgenre, my apologies for believing in its originality.
The setup is straight out of the 80's teen comedies upper-class prep-school senior Perry Stormaire is told that, instead of performing with his band at a club in New York City, he's being forced by his overbearing mother and strict disciplinarian father to go to prom with Gobi, the mousy exchange student they've been hosting for nine months. After a mishap with other students, she requests that he take her to New York City to experience the nightlife before she returns to Lithuania. Of course, what he doesn't know is that she's actually on a mission to kill five people in the City, but he's about to discover that and quickly. The entirety of the night consists of Perry in turns working with Gobi, attempting to escape her, uncovering her motive for the assassinations, and--as it happens in YA--doing a little growing up.
The action sequences are written well enough for the reader to follow what's going on, but will probably look better in its inevitable film adaptation. Where the book gets most of its mileage is from the dialogue between Perry and Gobi, and it treads pretty well on that. Sadly, while Gobi gets a requisite backstory, she never reaches beyond the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype that could have made her less a force of nature and more a person. Since the story is narrated by Perry, this makes some sense, but at the same time it's a pity that she couldn't be more fleshed out in the one wild night they spend together.
It's a page-turner, partly because the chapters are so short (some clock in at under two pages; one explicitly highlights the fact that it is one page) that you feel like you can read another chapter before putting it down, partly because Perry's narrative voice is a pretty strong, sympathetic one, and enjoyable to read. The chapter framing device of college application questions is a cute one, too.
The edition suffers some punctuation errors and one word completely randomly transposed onto another at one point, but there's nothing so horrible in the formatting as to take away from your enjoyment. I'm just hoping those got caught in the print edition.
As a book, it's quite enjoyable. My recommendation Make some butter movie popcorn to eat while reading. Try to keep the oil off your reader/the pages.
On prom night, a teenage boy is horrified to have his date, an ungainly exchange student staying with his family, reveal her true identity as an assassin out for revenge.
I was amused by the basic conceit of an ugly duckling turning, not into a swan, but a hawk, and by the college application questions that began each chapter. I was however too sexist to enjoy seeing a perfectly healthy young male being bullied by a girl. Also, though I love women action heroes, I cringed the amount of damage this girl suffered and I couldn't believe the physical exploits she performed despite that damage.
Still, I would be happy to see this made a movie.
When teenage boys think of female foreign exchange students they go deep in fantasy land with images of beautiful girls with foreign accents. Perry's family is hosting an exchange student from Lithuania and Gobija doesn't fit the fantasy at all. She wears shapeless outfits and is socially awkward. Perry's parents make him take her to the prom, when instead he wants to spend a night in the city playing with his band. So, he isn't thrilled in the least bit. What he doesn't know is that Gobi isn't an exchange student, she isn't a teenager, and she's been hiding a killer bod--literally, she's a killer. On the night of the prom she's out to kill five people and she drags Perry along since he has his father's car. Perry is in for the night of his life as he learns more about Gobi and why she's after these people. There are violent scenes, but this book is pure fun with non-stop action. I just added the sequel, PERRY'S KILLER PLAYLIST, to my wish list. I want more Perry and Gobi.
A spoof on James Bond, this book is funny, violent, intriguing, fast-paced, with a number of weird characters thrown in to make the mix come to just the right boil. What happens when the exchange student your parents had invited to share your home, turns out to be an international assassin? Pick this one up to find out, and while you're at it, buy Perry's Killer Playlist as well, because it is, if anything, even more bizarre and funnier than the first book.
