Three weeks ago, Daddy left town with the other volunteer firefighters to fight the fires in the city, and Tom and Mother have looked after the farm. Radios, phones and TV broadcasts have fallen silent, trains have stopped coming and the main road has remained empty. When Tom finds a large metal egg on the farm, and a metal-spiked echidna hatches from it, the neighbour Mr McGregor wants to kill it. Whatever has silenced the rest of the world is creeping into town. Roads start talking and zombies come into town, wanting to tell everyone how they died. People must fight back. But Tom thinks differently. The echidna, which he names Thing, is a true friend. Thing protects Tom from the greedy roads, the evil zombies and even Mr McGregor. To find Daddy, Tom needs to follow a map he has found in a vagrant camp site, a map which leads him straight to the place where all the trouble started.

This fantasy sci-fi adventure has an unusual hero - a young boy named Tom. He's the one looking for (his) Daddy, who left 3 weeks earlier with others, to fight a fire threatening the city...so far, so not a sci-fi story at all, you may think about Patty Jansen's heartwarming tale of a family pulling together with their community to overcome a common peril?
Not so, for soon after this event things take an apocalyptic turn for the most peculiar and somewhat dark, as suddenly all communications with the outside world cease, followed swiftly by failure of all fuel-powered forms of transport, which soon causes the isolation of Tom and his mother on their farm, where they struggle to keep 'normal' life going without tv etc, or means of contacting Tom's Daddy.
This is added to by the seemingly hallucinatory events that may or may not relate to the purple clouds that have appeared in the sky, along with unicorns, silver crocodiles in puddles, frog-shaped bubbles, in streets that demand payment to use them and, (non-threatening) zombies, who wander about telling those who see them how they died!
After he finds a strange egg on the farm, that hatches into a metallic echidna-like creature he calls Thing, Tom decides to wait no longer - he's going to find his Daddy! Using a map he found at a nearby traveller's camp he leaves the farm, taking only Thing for comfort and protection from any weird and wonderful events and characters he may meet along the way.
Has there been some sort of mass drug experiment by the Government?
Is Russia, or China behind the apocalyptic events? Is it the start of an alien invasion?
Can young Tom make it safely to the city and back, with/without his Daddy?
How will his Mommy cope alone on the farm with no resources or help?
When/if they return how will the family survive the new world that's become their reality?
Can things ever be the same as before? Where did Thing come from?
Why is Thing there on Earth - for a particular reason or by accident? Will Thing stay on Earth?
There's such a lot going on in this YA suburban space-opera you won't want it to end...luckily there's a sequel!

I started out cautiously, thinking I probably wasn't going to like this book, it's pretty 'far out'. But I ended up really enjoying the story! I would love a pet 'Thing'. ) It's all set up for part II, waiting... D
