I love time travel and this book is so different than I thought it would be. Lightning strikes altar a person to a different time period (1940-1950's). The time line is right on as to what was going on historically at that time. There are many complex characters and the author has you reading almost 3 different stories at the same time, weaving them in and out until they almost come together. This was a page turner, but you also had to pay attention to each chapter because of the weaving. The only disappointment is, it does leave you hanging, and you have to buy the next book just to find out what happens next.

This one was a little slow to draw me in, but now that I finished I plan to buy book two Tradecraft. The ending was a bit abrupt and left me hanging, but I knew when I started that it is a series. If there were any spelling or grammatical errors I didn't notice. There is not much sci-fi related to the time travel, but there is historical tie-ins, Cold War espionage, CIA Area 51 stuff and some overall good characters with decent but not overdone back stories
This was a fantastic read! I enjoy most things time travel/ alt-realities but this one really stands out. It feels more believable then most stories of this genre. I feel like the characters reacted as most would to such improbable events. There wasn't this blank acceptance by everyone they encountered, it was dangerous to share the information and they were very careful about it. That said, it was incredibly fast paced and lots of moving parts, plots within plots, so pay attention! Didn't get much done while I was immersed in this great story!
I don't normally read science fiction/conspiracy theory/time travel books, but upon an enthused recommendation decided to give it a try.... and, this book has won me over, or at least Randy McWilson has. If you like a fast-paced story with twists and turns and "ah ha" moments, you'll love this read. As proof of how much I enjoyed it, I've ordered Book 2, Tradecraft, and am looking forward to the continuing saga.
What a creative approach to the time-honored (groan) genre of time travel sci fi! And what a cliff-hanger ending! Absolutely nothing is wrapped up at the end of this book; rather, everything is rapidly unraveling. And artfully pulls in Area 51 lore. Who knew they weren't aliens?

And, as a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University in "South Normal," I loved this one set amid the cornfields and streets I remember so well. Looking forward to the second in the series!
I had hopes for the several story lines to come together to a satisfying end. The story lines come together, but I went away not caring about any of the characters. The unanswered questions don't feel like cliff-hangers. They are more like hanging threads in an incomplete tapestry.

The story is written well. Each scene had enough punch to keep me reading. But the end was like an unfinished sneeze, you feel it building for a while and then it all just goes away. The characters show flashes of conflict and drama, and the "stuck in time" theme works well enough to keep things interesting. But too many loose ends left me wanting more. And I never found a character I cared about. The book ends with no satisfying resolution to the characters' collective quandary being ripped out of their own time and into mid-twentieth-century Normal, IL.

I'd recommend it for an airplane read. It will hold your interest and entertain you, and you can easily leave the characters stuck in the past once you reach the end of the book and your final destination.
Though I come from a family of sci-fi lovers, I have never read a sci-fi book myself...until now. I am hooked on this series, and I did not expect that to be the case. I bought the hardback and as others have mentioned, the different font used in the flashback chapters makes the narrative much easier to follow. The plot summary given in the description is accurate, providing a good preview of the storyline the book will explore.

This is a psychological study with a "what if" component that the reader can easily adopt. This first book leaves some open threads while still managing to provide a full story that satisfies the reader. You did it, Randy McWilson. You sucked me in. I have to buy the second book now!
Even though I am an admitted time travel aficionado, this book is right near the top of my list of favorites. I did have to stop my reading a few times to refresh my recollection on historical events which occurred in the thirties through the fifties, but loved the way the author tied them into the storyline.
Some of the Cold War scare I could recall as a small child, but I went to Wikipedia to get more historical background on what was happening in the Soviet Union during those years.
But even if the Russian angle and the Cold War does not peak your interest, read this book for the time travel aspect. Think about whether you could successfully assimilate into a small American town I the mid fifties, refrain from using current slang, mentioning events that have not yet occurred and generally just keep a low profile during an era of suspicion brought about by the years of communist scares.
Can't wait to read the second book and hope there may even be more after that.
